Expanding access to insurance via research, education, technology and capacity-building
Labs provides companies access to cutting-edge advisory services that enable them to better provide low-income clients with high quality and simple insurance products –providing a safety net and a platform for them to escape the cycle of poverty. Labs’ catalytic grant
capital support helps pave the way for scalable growth, broader outreach to those who are poor and excluded, and a more efficient and effective market globally of risk mitigation tools for the poor.
LeapFrog Labs works primarily in LeapFrog’s priority countries including South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, India and the Philippines.
• Identify and expand microinsurance business opportunities in target markets, byconducting local market analysis and feasibility studies by leveraging strategic seed funding to help scale strong emerging businesses that are piloting innovative microinsurance products.
• Design quality, relevant, affordable insurance products that are crucial for low-income people, but difficult to make
commercially sustainable (e.g health insurance).
• Access and experiment with technology that lowers transaction and processing costs, driving down the price of
policies to benefit low-income customers and make insurance affordable to a broader base of clients
• Develop and distribute materials that explain insurance and financial services to low-income people, empowering them to make wise choices.
• Engage high-volume distributors (including microfinance institutions, NGOs, retailers, mobile networks) to strengthen their capacity to deliver quality insurance products to low-income and excluded clients
• Design and implement simple, high quality tools to improve performance and measure the impact of microinsurance businesses.
LeapFrog Labs also runs a Fellowship Program that offers highly motivated professionals an opportunity to hone their skills in microinsurance and impact investing through a one year placement in a LeapFrog office (Johannesburg, Sydney, and Edinburgh) or portfolio company. Calls for applications are announced bi-annually.
